Skin Protection and Why We Need SPF

UV Radiation is the primary cause of free radicals in the skin. You have two types that you should be concerned about UVA/UVB.

The UVB rays stand for BURN, you will feel these rays. Unfortunately, one of the most damaging rays UVA you don’t feel. UVA can penetrate through clouds or glass. Riding in your car or sitting by a sunny window will give you damage that you won’t feel. Thus is why most people have more sun damage on the left side of their face, it is exposed next to the window while driving. UVA rays are present year round. You will not see the damage from these rays for several years. They also penetrate the skin 30-40 times deeper than UVB rays.

How do we protect our skin from this type of damage? Choose IS Clinical SPF 50, it is a broad spectrum SPF that protects against UVA/UVB rays. This formula is oil free and vitamin E enriched making it a perfect solution for all skin types especially oily/acne skin.

Be sure to apply your SPF 30 minutes before you go out and saturate your outer part of your skin the epidermis.

When is Medication Necessary for Acne Treatment

When is medication necessary for acne treatment?

This is a common question.   As an esthetician, I try to guide and educate you to understand what your treatment options are available.  A consultation is the perfect way to start this educational process. Many areas will need to be discussed as to your family history, how you care for your skin, diet/exercise, and what type of breakouts  you challenged with.

I like to start with the basics and teach you the #anatomy of your skin and what really causes acne. Many time there are myths associated with acne treatments and I want you to understand the science behind treatment. Commonly, estheticians, work in close relation to other medical providers. It will take a good team to treat all the different components associated with #acne.

Skin surface bacteria is always present but causes no harm as long as it is exposed to oxygen. When bacteria is trapped in the pore, where the environment has little oxygen, the bacteria breaks down the oil glands to free fatty acids. These acids cause inflammation, irritation redness and swelling that lead to pustule formation. If infection with fluid pustules is present, oral antibiotics may be necessary to help provide control and promote healing.

Topical antibiotic lotions also are very effective and sometimes both oral and topical antibiotics are necessary. The skin will usually get worse before it gets better, so it is important to stay the course of the treatment.

When medication is necessary for treatment of acne, tretinoin is a common topical drug  that is used (Retin A);  oral minocycline; a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic in addition to topical clindamycin may be prescribed by your physician. For severe cases  Accutane (isotretinoin) is prescribed.  It is important to use sunscreen and wear a hat to protect your skin during treatment due to photo sensitivity. Sometimes hormone medications such as birth control or hormone replacement therapy’s may also  be suggested. Your physician will guide you on the benefits of each medication.

Keeping the skin balanced and not to dry is very important and this is when the esthetician is most helpful. We perform the extractions to clear the skin and recommend the right topical skin care routine to aid your healing process.

Together your physician and an esthetician will guide you to healthy glowing skin.

Sunforgettable Face Primer with SPF

#colorescience face primer is an SPF 30 made with 5.4% Titanium Dioxide & 4% Zinc Oxide. This combination offers a high level broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection. It has a universal color shade that works for most skin tones. I love to top this primer off with Colorescience loose mineral sunscreen powder SPF30. This will give you the ultimate sun protection. It is easy to apply and fits easily in your pocket and #golfers love this product because it doesn’t get on your grips. Contact #skindeepgj.com today to order and try this #sunscreen out. This is my favorite choice for oily/acne skin types.

What is the difference between mineral based sunscreens and chemical based?

Mineral based sunscreens scatter ultraviolet rays away from the skin, they are physical solar filters.  While chemical based sunscreens absorb various wavelengths of UV radiation. My preference is to use titanium oxide and zinc oxide. Some will say that the mineral based SPF will cause cancer. To date, there is no clinical evidence stating that these solar filters pose any health threat to human skin.  We do know that exposure to the sun causes skin cancer. Please choose a SPF with greater than a 15 spf. Skin Deep uses and recommends #IS clinical Eclipse SPF 50+ tinted or beige and #Sanitas Solar Block.#Skindeepgj.com#sunscreen#skincancersun3

Children Need Sunscreen

It is Crucial for Children to Wear Sunscreen

Despite numerous efforts to encourage people to wear sunscreen, a new study shows only 1 in 4 children regularly uses sunscreen.

Researchers say more than half of the children studied also reported having a sunburn in the previous summer. Experts say those results are troubling. The problem is if you sunburn in childhood, you raise your risk of developing skin cancer later on.Recent studies showed that children who have a sunburn at an early age are nearly twice as likely to develop melanoma in adulthood. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, and is responsible for nearly 9,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.
